Dud’s Signature (please note the naked lady pictures are at the bottom today)

Dud’s signature was unique and distinctive. He wrote it all in lower case.  It had evolved over time. In ’44 he still used an upper case D.

By ’67 the first d was now lower case.  It’s hard to get more specific about the evolution of his signature because he rarely signed any of his work.  Of the several hundred pieces in this collection, 4 are signed.  The example of his signature we use for Dud’s Erotica is one from his personal dictionary, the ’67 signature.

The ’44 signature is from the early nude couple featured in the September 13, 2008

blog entry and on the web site in the Couples section of Art.

The other examples of his signature date from; ’83, a pen and ink nude, backside, on cardboard, ’84 and ’86, both on the back of small nudes done with Windsor colored inks on textured watercolor paper.

Here is ’83…

…and ’84 and ‘86.

Why so much about his signature?  I think it’s a cool, well thought out design element, that’s why we have incorporated it into the visual “language” of the web site, blog, business cards and limited edition prints.  I’m also teaching myself Adobe Flash and just finished my first animation, Dud’s Signature.  When you click on it it opens in the same window, so the link is below, click on "DUD"

Signing off…
